Pots going into the Kiln!

Pieces waiting to go into kiln.
Yes!  I have finally loaded a kiln that was my own work.  It should be exciting to see them come out later this week.  The platter below is from Katie's shower that everyone signed.

You should be seeing my postcard soon in your mailbox (snail mail) for the Holiday Show.  The show will be November 19 & 20, November 26 & 27 and December 3 & 4 or you can always call and make an appointment to see my work.

I hope all is well.  Stay warm.  David

Kiln is 1/3rd loaded!  Break time!!

YWCA Group from New York City!

I had the YWCA pottery group from New York City here on Tuesday.  I gave them a short little show and tell in the morning after they all had arrived.  They then glazed their pieces with my glaze.  I fired their work on Thursday in my kiln.  There will be more pictures this afternoon when the pieces come out.

It was a nice day to have a group here.  Fall is in the air!

I'm Back!!!

Okay, this summer has gone by very quickly with Katie (my daughter) and Thom getting married in the backyard here in Connecticut and then having another reception/party in Minnesota six weeks later.  I wish them both much happiness and lots of love as they start this new chapter as husband and wife.  Congratulations!!

So, while we were in Minnesota we gave Thom and Katie a "Katie" vase for their new home.  Thom than shared with me that I should try making plates and bowls with this design.  So, I liked the challenge and have been working on designing some this past week.  Here is a picture of the lip of the bowel.

In addition, I have designed some new shapes to plates.  Gina helped me load a bisque this afternoon and I will hopefully get another bisque loaded later this week.  It's time to get back to work...

I hope all is well with you...

David

p.s.  Please look along the right-hand column of this blog regarding my teaching schedule for fall classes at both Wesleyan Potters and Guilford Art Center.

Trying to get back to work...

Bridal Shower Platter...

As part of Katie's Connecticut Bridal Shower - all the guest signed and wrote little notes to both Katie and Thom on the lip of a platter.  This platter has finally made it to the electric kiln.

Happy 4th of July (belated)!!!

Summer has arrived and the dog was enjoying hanging out in the studio with us last weekend on the cement floor.  Gina and I got the air conditioner installed and running for the studio.  I was able to load an electric kiln full pieces!  Gina carried up the final pieces from the last gas kiln to the gallery before the temperature was unbearable.

Stay Cool!

Congratulations to Katie & Thom!

Katie (my daughter) and Thom
were married this past weekend
in the backyard.
Congratulations to both of them!

There were several pieces of pottery involved with the wedding. The guest all received a tumbler that were stamped with Thom and Katie and the date of the wedding (6.18.11).

The flowers were arranged by David Brown an Artist from Old Saybrook.  He lives in a hay house on his farm in which grows the flowers for the arrangements.  The flowers were all placed in vases, pitcher and/or a bucket that Katie selected from my gallery.

The wedding cake had two whistles on top!

Today, I made my first piece of pottery in my own studio and I'm looking forward to teaching at Wesleyan Pottery - tomorrow.

Katie & Thom's Tumblers

It's been awhile...  I have been working on Katie & Thom's tumblers for their wedding.  Here are the some photos of the production of the tumblers.  It is my hope to have them completed by the end of next week.

They are glazed in two different colors in groups of 6 or 7 tumblers.  Yes, they were stamped with their name and date of the wedding with iron in the lettering.

I hope all is well.

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring!  We (Gina and I) have been trying to pull together the spring show postcard and have finally decided on a photo.  I had a detour from the studio - needed a new washer and updated the pantry in the process.  Checkout the picture - no snow!  However, we have new snow on the ground tonight.

Have a great night!

Snow, Ice, Rain and Cold.... I'm trying to get back to work!

So, we have had one storm after another and we are expected to have another one today.  We had big flakes of snow and now the rain has just started.  The tempature is actually 38 degrees and feels nice outside.  Let's hope everything is still standing after this storm (and the next two which are scheduled to come, too).  Yes, we have had someone clear the barn roofs and the garage roof.  Time will only tell.  Let's hope for the best!  At least, Mia has enjoyed the cold and most of the snow...

Upcoming Events:  Wesleyan Potters
I have two workshops at Wesleyan Potters.  The first workshop will be this Friday, February 11th and the second workshop will be Friday, February 18th.  Both workshops will be on decoration of your pieces.  I encourage everyone to bring at least six (6) bisqued pieces with them to the workshop.  As you can see from the picture (above), I have my pieces bisqued and ready for the workshops.

Back to Work!
I have a kiln load almost ready to glaze and then fire (see photo above).  I'm still throwing a few more items - because, both Gina and I believe we do not have enough (see photos below).  What do you think?

Stay Warm and Be Safe.  Below are some pictures of the farm taken today.

Did you forget to sign-up for a Class?

I still have openings in my Tuesday evening class at Guilford Art Center.

In this class I will teach students how to make pottery in a number of ways, both hand built and thrown. We will throw pots on the wheel that aren't round, slab build pots that aren't square, and glaze all of the work using color and pattern to make the pots sing with excitement. I will show a number of techniques that allow for the easy and expressive construction of pottery forms. No experience is necessary.

The class starts on January 11th and will go until March 1st from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm.  Tuition is $260 and Member Tuition is $234.00.
The link to Guilford Art Center is   http://www.guilfordartcenter.org/school.html.

I hope I will see you in class on Tuesday!
