Creatures & Pictures

Hello Everyone,


I have been busy working and trying to get my next kiln load glazed.  It is my hope to load the kiln with Gina this coming weekend.  I thought you might like to see some of the creatures that I made for Lucy (my sister-in-law).  These creatures are also whistles; yes, you blow through the nose.

In addition, while Katie was home we took pictures for the winter show postcard.  It is becoming that "season"!  Now, we cannot decide which picture to use.  Time will tell!

Katie's Home and Helping Me in the Studio!

Yes, that is right...Katie is home and has been helping me in the studio.  She has sanded and waxed all of my pieces for me.  Here are few photos of her working away earlier today.  It has been wonderful to have her home and helping me out.  Thank you, Katie!

I have been working on making some new designs.  I have enjoyed learning how to make handles and want to add more shapes and sizes to the handles.  Today, I made a berry bowl (squared bowl with two triangle like things on the lip to add the handles) that will have a handle (see picture below).  In addition, I made a bucket with two pulled handles on each side.  It is my hope to add a handle to the two pulled handles (sorry, no picture of this piece).

New Oil Servers....

I have created a new oil server with handles designed by me.  They both have handles made from a dead limb on our butterfly bush.  Thanks to help from a jewerly designer, I managed to make two handles this week.  I have started to make five more without metal handles.

Busy Weekend and New YouTube Video on Chattering...

Thursday....  Because of the heat and humidity, we did not get the kiln compelety opened until late on Thursday evening.  I had started in the morning with taking down the first wall of the door.  Then, I had to have the kiln cool down more... 

The pictures are pieces for a soon-to-be bride and groom.  Congratulations!

Friday...  Gina and I volunteered at the Guilford Art Center Expo on the Green in Guilford from 10 am until 3 pm.  We were at the North Gate collecting money.

Sunday...  We are looking forward to spending time with family and having some great food!

Wednesday is Wesleyan Potters Day

I teach on Wednesday mornings at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, Connecticut. Today, I discussed glazing with my students. 

We only have a few weeks left before this semester is complete.

One, Two, Three...The Kiln is Loaded

One...

Today, took us (Gina and I) a long time to start loading and actually get everything into the kiln.  We manage to get more in than we thought we could.

I first made sure the shelves where clean of which some of the shelves needed to be kiln washed.  We then started to load in the heat.  Gina got the fan from the throwing room and set it up to give us some air.  We kept the air conditioner on in the throwing room for us to take a break from time-to-time.

In this picture, you can see my yellow knee pad and green rug to help protect my legs.  Most of this section of the kiln are orders for different customers.

Two...

Yes, you see three sinks, more plates and bowls in this section.  In addition, on the top shelf is my new design of an oil server next to the sink.  The sinks were really hard to put in and took a lot of time to put everything in safely.  The bottom sink was actually out for the loading and then we added it back in after we had the rest of the stack done.

All three sinks are on order with two customers.  The sink in the center will be going to California.  This sink is similiar to the sink that is broken (by a contractor with a hammer!) in the gallery that holds the door open.  The other two sinks will be going to Brandford.  They both have stoney creek granite on the lip.

Three...

Yah!!!  We are done with loading the kiln.  The other two oil servers are on the bottom shelf and the next shelf up.  Yes, there are more plates, bowls, and cups.

We started around 9:00 am and finished around 4:00 pm.  We then bricked up the door and started the burners.  The kiln is warming up for the evening!

I will be firing the kiln tomorrow.  I should be able to open the kiln on Thursday.

Dog Days of Summer

As, you can tell the dog was hot. She was sleeping on the cement floor in the studio with the air conditioner blowing on her.

Okay! We are finally ready to load the kiln tommorow. I spent the day glazing the final pieces (3 sinks, 2 new oil pots, and others).
